![]() As many of you know, the repair, restoration and move of Carlyle Montgomery's condor sculpture "Soaring in Stone" at the Ojai Valley Museum has been completed. The beautiful sculpture is now located right in front of the Ojai Visitor's Center at the museum on Ojai Avenue. Joanne Duby, Chris Provenzano and other artists did a beautiful job on the repair and restoration. Many others were involved in the process. Much credit goes to Ojai Valley Museum Director Michele Pracy for her vision and determination to execute and complete the project. Already more people are aware of and are enjoying the sculpture. All other sites, including the Museum's, call the sculpture "Soaring in Stone". So what is the actual title Mr. Montgomery gave his sculpture?

Dear Artlover, the correct title of the condor sculpture is "Soaring in Stone". I had seen the title "Condor and Youth Soaring for Freedom" written somewhere at the time I was doing my research. That was several years ago and I can no longer locate it. Perhaps I mistook a description of the piece for a title. Elise

Strangely enough, after I posted above, I found a picture online which showed the sculpture with the brass plaque on the pedestal included. This plaque did (and does?) say, "Condor and Youth Soaring for Freedom"! 6/23/2012 10:45:09 am
Artlover: strange that you found this indeed. I was just at the condor re-dedication today and noticed the original plaque said Condor and Youth Soaring for Freedom. After your email I thought I was going crazy because knew for sure that I had seen the sculpture called that but couldn't remember where I'd seen it. Old newspaper articles in my records call it Soaring in Stone. Well, I guess that's what it's going to be called from now on because a new plaque just installed by the museum calls it Soaring in Stone. What can you do?
